Happy New Year!
Happy New Year River Community Church! It is hard to believe that we are already in the year 2015. Time really does fly by for me (and I am guessing that I am not alone). My daughter Eliza got a small porcelain sculpture the other day as a gift that had a date of 1985 on it. At first I was thinking that was not that long ago – since I was in high school then – but then I did the math and it was 30 years! That would have been the equivalent to me getting something when I was 5 (in 1975) that had a date of 1945 on it (World War II – which felt like ancient history when I was kid). Oh well – I guess I am just getting older.
Although I do not officially do New Years’ resolutions – I do love the start of a new year. There is something so refreshing thinking about starting the year with a clean slate. When you think about it, the greatest gift ever given was a clean slate – only that slate then stays clean – forever. Of course I am talking about the forgiveness of our sins through the blood of Jesus Christ. In fact, right this minute I am eating some red velvet cake and looking out the window which reminds me that our scarlet sins will be made white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). I liked the red cake – could easily have done without the white snow reminder ;-).
So although I do not do New Years’ resolutions – I wanted to share one personal plan for 2015 and another for the River Leadership team. For me, personally – I plan on reading the Bible in “a year”. I got one of those special Bibles a few years ago (segmented daily readings of the Old & New Testament, along with some Psalms and Proverbs) – but never really followed it. I think this is the year. One reason I am telling you is that you can help hold me accountable. I plan on giving you an update each month when I write my blog. So far I am doing OK (but will admit that I had to do more than “one day” a couple times already)!
The Leadership Team plan for the year is increased communication in the form of regularly scheduled Family Matters meetings like the one we have planned for this Sunday. 2014 was very much a transition year for our church with a new senior pastor and various individuals joining/leaving the Leadership team, and I will be honest in that it has taken some time to get the leadership team aligned in order to better communicate. But we are excited about what God has planned for this church and look forward to providing some updates on Sunday - so please stay for the potluck, fellowship and church update.
Wishing you all a very Blessed New Year!
Family Matters Potluck and Meeting
Let's get together and try to warm up the winter by having a potluck! We'll provide the meat and the vegetables, you bring a salad or a dessert to go with it. We'll enjoy some fellowship together and have a short update and discussion about what's new at church. It's a great way to stay updated, keeping informed and give some input about your church and family.
Women's Winter Birthday Party
Sunday, January 18
Let's get together to celebrate! ALL women of the River are invited to join us as we celebrate those whose birthdays are in December, January, and February. Please contact Shanna Tilley if you have a winter birthday so that we can prepare a special recognition for you at the party.
The offering envelopes are here! You can pick yours up from Barb Broffitt on Sundays. If you don't have any and would like some, she can fix you up with enough for the whole year.
Mission of the Month - Lindsay Olesberg & Intervarsity Christian Fellowship
Lindsey Oelsburg is involved in engaging people in the scriptures through the international Lausanne Movement, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and is a board member with Wycliffe Bible Translators. InterVarsity is preparing a multiethnic community at the University of Iowa aimed at God's mission of transforming lives, engaging the students and faculty. Groups meet together weekly to study Scripture, pray, fellowship and also do periodic outreach. Weekly meetings on Mondays and conferences including Urbana round them out.
You can encourage Lindsay or ask her questions by sending her am email at email@example.com
We encourage you to contact others serving elsewhere to say hello and let them know you are praying for them, they appreciate it. Prayer letters may also be picked up from the Resource Room at The River along with current info including River family prayer requests in "Prayer Matters". If you would like to be included on our Prayer Team, send us an email. We will send out requests, usually once a week for you to pray for. If you have a story of someone serving in Jesus' name, send it our way and we will pass it on!
