Thoughts From the Elders
From Jim Broffitt
When I first attended our church, I knew very little about the Bible, Jesus Christ, or God’s plan for salvation. I could recite John 3:16, but to me those words had little meaning. That was 35 years ago. Our pastor was a great Biblical preacher, and after hearing a few sermons and doing some Bible reading, I was hooked and I committed my life to Christ. I enjoyed attending church, hearing the choir sing and listening to sermons. But I wanted more – I wanted to get to know people and become a part of the fellowship.
There were a few adult Sunday school classes, and I started attending. The sermons were inspiring, but there wasn’t any discussion in church. That happens in Sunday school and Bible studies. I joined in and learned from the wisdom of long-time Christians, got to know them, and made friendships. That’s where connections happened. first attended our church, I knew very little about the Bible, Jesus Christ, or God’s plan for salvation. There were other opportunities to get plugged in. The church was involved in some construction or remodeling projects. I like working with my hands, so I got involved. Whether you’re remodeling a restroom, raking leaves, filling cracks in the parking lot, or washing dishes, working side by side with someone is a great way to bond and build a friendship. And that kind of work is fun when you are doing it with others and doing it for the Lord.
Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT) 23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
Do you want to get connected? It will not happen unless you take some initiative, and there are ample opportunities. Here are three:
- Currently we have two adult Sunday school classes. Feel free to join in at 9:30 am.
- Thanksgiving is next week, and we will feed a few hundred people. The church will be abuzz with activity on Wednesday – cutting up fruit, celery, onions, turkeys, etc., and setting up tables and decorating. (Alert: no pie tasting until Thursday!) On Thursday we will be serving guests and interacting with them from noon to 5:00 pm, giving rides, and delivering meals to shut-ins. It takes a lot of people to pull this off; it is a church-wide activity, and we get several volunteers from outside of our church. There are jobs for everyone.
- In January we plan to remove a wall between two classrooms in the west wing. This will provide a larger room for Kids’ Church and other large-group activities.
If you want to get connected and build friendships, look for opportunities and then step up and get involved. It is rewarding.

November Missions Focus: Neighborhood Outreach
Fall finds us busy with schedules of school, work and all kinds of other
activities. Our River family has many opportunities to fellowship with our neighbors, etc. So November is a good month to remember those who we met at Trunk or Treat, to make new friendships there and renew others we see more often. Through the Thanksgiving Dinner we do the same while serving a traditional meal for everyone to enjoy. Operation Christmas Child gives us the chance to reach those neighbors further away, around the US and across the globe. By sharing with our neighbors, we get to be a part of what God is doing in the world, some places we can’t go to as easily our close neighbors, and some we see everyday. Pray for a busy month, that it would be fun and fruitful!
Operation Christmas Child
Thanks to everyone who is packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child! We've already collected over 30. For information on how to pack a shoebox go here. Bring your shoebox back to The River office by Sunday, November 23rd (earlier would be appreciated, later, they will not be included)so they can be shipped to Tanzania, Uganda, India, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago this year. Thanks also to the ladies who make pillowcase dresses and other craft items to be included in boxes. Please help change the life of a child, possibly for eternity! Questions? Ask Ann in the church office.
November 27 from 12 - 5pm
Thanksgiving is another opportunity to serve this fall at The River. We serve a free meal to anyone in the community that wants to come, that includes you! But we need lots of help, especially people to pick up turkeys Monday from church and cook them to bring back Wednesday to be pulled apart. Please fill out a flyer this Sunday at church to bring food, help make food, drive people and meals, donate turkeys, etc. Take a flyer from the Welcome Center to give to people to invite. It takes all of us working together to keep this ministry a success year after year. Questions? Ask Claude or Carol Williams when you see them.
We encourage you to contact others serving elsewhere to say hello and let them know you are praying for them, they appreciate it. Prayer letters may also be picked up from the Resource Room at The River along with current info including River family prayer requests in "Prayer Matters". If you would like to be included on our Prayer Team, send us an email. We will send out requests, usually once a week for you to pray for. If you have a story of someone serving in Jesus' name, send it our way and we will pass it on!
